Our research program, known as the Sleep & Health Applied Research Program (SHARP), focuses on basic and translational research supported by multiple federal agencies, including the VA, DoD, NSF, and NIH. Our goal is to unravel the mechanisms through which sleep contributes to brain health. My journey with NAPS began during my neurology residency at Washington University in St. Louis, where I had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Yo-El Ju, the Co-PI. It was during this time that our scientific team at WashU identified the significant role of sleep disruption in the progression of Alzheimer's disease, a groundbreaking finding (Kang, Lim et al., Science 2009). This experience ignited my fascination with sleep, leading me to pursue a clinical and research fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, I have dedicated my clinical and research endeavors to understanding the pivotal role that sleep plays, not only as a crucial window to assess brain health but also as a potential driver of disease.</image:caption>

Furthermore, I co-direct the Sleep & Health Applied Research Program (SHARP). Our primary research focus within SHARP is to enhance our understanding of the relationship between disrupted sleep and long-term neurodegeneration. One notable example of this is our investigation into REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) as a potential early indicator of synucleinopathies. Our overarching objective is to conduct research that has tangible clinical implications, aiming to make a real-world impact. We strongly believe in the power of collaboration and teamwork, recognizing that scientific progress thrives on collective effort rather than isolated endeavors. Participating in the NAPS consortium aligns perfectly with these principles and provides us with an excellent platform for collaboration, support, and the pursuit of scientific advancement.</image:caption>

<image:caption>UCLA Principal Investigator I am a Professor of Neurology and Sleep Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. My focus has been on managing patients with REM sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), who often have remarkable life stories before being diagnosed with this condition. As part of their management, it is important to address their expectations. Beyond managing dream enactment, patients with RBD are searching for solutions that can safeguard against and prevent the development of neurodegenerative conditions. I strongly believe that collaborating with colleagues through the NAPS Consortium can accelerate the discovery of pharmacologic interventions that may delay or protect our patients from neurodegeneration. Utilizing REM sleep behavior disorder as a window of opportunity to slow down the neurologic changes associated with the onset of neurodegeneration is a truly humbling endeavor, made possible through our collective efforts. The most rewarding aspect of being part of NAPS is the opportunity to provide our patients with answers and potentially effective solutions. I consider it a privilege to collaborate with incredibly talented and compassionate colleagues. I am excited to share my enthusiasm and passion for educating our community of patients and colleagues about this disorder. In my leisure time, I enjoy traveling internationally and immersing myself in different cultures and civilizations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Project Manager I've been working with RBD patients since 2014. Over time, I developed a great relationship with our patients. This special relationship is important because the patients feel that they are supported and listened to. Our patients are committed to our research project, and they value the importance of the research done to better understand their sleep disorder. I feel that our patients are part of our team, and together, we can learn more about RBD and all the consequences related to it. Working on RBD offers a unique opportunity to study how some neurological conditions such as PD, LDB, and MSA progress over time, even before being able to see the clinical symptoms. Identifying prodromal markers of such neurological conditions could eventually lead us toward neuroprotective treatment and eventually stop the progression of these diseases which would be extraordinary for our patients.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Co-Principal Investigator My patients inspired me to start NAPS. I am a neurologist and sleep medicine physician, and my patients with RBD ask if there is any treatment available to decrease their risk of developing dementia or Parkinson disease. I was inspired to organize an effort to band together with colleagues at several North American institutions to come up with an answer to this question. This effort grew into the NAPS Consortium. Our collective goal is to be able to tell our patients with RBD that there is an effective treatment to prevent dementia or Parkinson disease.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sub-Investigator & Biomarker Core Co-Leader I think the most interesting and important thing about NAPS is how so many disciplines have come together to address a shared mission. The collaboration between clinical neurologists with expertise in sleep and movement disorders, neuropsychologists, radiologists, geneticists, basic scientists, and statisticians is truly remarkable and represents a powerful approach to address a complex disorder. The NAPS consortium offers a unique opportunity to learn from individuals with RBD in order to better understand risk factors for the development and progression of Parkinson disease and related disorders. This understanding will be critical in the future to measure the effectiveness of novel treatments designed to slow and stop disease progression.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Polysomnographic Technologist We have an amazing NAPS team – they are caring, dedicated and motivated about the research we are doing – I could not ask for a better team. I love meeting the participants. They all have a unique story regarding how they are affected by RBD and their hopes for how this research will help others even if it does not help them. They give me the motivation and the drive to work as hard as I can on NAPS research. To know this research could someday lead to better treatment or even a cure for RBD, Parkinson’s or related disorders makes my heart happy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Deputy Director NAPS combines my interest in sleep medicine and clinical research. I am passionate about NAPS because of our shared mission and our NAPS community. Since NAPS is a longitudinal study, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to get to know our participants and their families during annual assessments. I look forward to seeing each of our participants and they continue to motivate me. Our NAPS team is highly collaborative, hardworking, supportive, and fun. I feel incredibly lucky for the opportunity to provide support to our NAPS research teams and play a small part in helping with this research.</image:caption>
